History of Masks

The use of masks goes back to ancient times. Whether they were used in ritual ceremonies, while hunting, or during wars, they have played a constant role in societies around the world. It is difficult to deduce where and when masks first came about, but it is thought that they were first introduced thousands of years ago as a symbol of authority. According to one source, the oldest masks ever discovered are 9,000 years old, though it is believed that the practice of making masks could go back as many as 40,000 years, and these older versions did not stand the test of time. A variety of ancient cultures used masks in myriad ways: the cult of Shiva, a god appears wearing a horned mask. Ancient Greeks often wore masks during bacchanalia and in the Dionysus cult. Ancient Romans often created death masks after noteworthy citizens died. While the Black Death made its way around Europe, doctors often wore half-masks that covered their eyes and featured long, beak-like noses that protected them from being infected by the disease, which was thought to be airborne.

In more modern times, masks have been used during performances to help actors better express emotions. This is particularly noteworthy of the ancient Greek plays, which were performed in large theaters. Because not everyone could see and hear the actors, masks like the juxtaposed Comedy and Tragedy helped better convey their messages. Masks are still used today in many stage performances (like the Phantom of the Opera), television shows and movies, but for the everyday person, they are perhaps most commonly worn at Halloween and to costume parties.
